Mike Thorson, Journey for Impact Founder

Travel has a rare ability to open hearts and
spark genuine connection -
something often lost in the rush of daily life.

And when people truly connect,  generosity follows.

I learned this firsthand early in my career while on a trip with a group of donors to the Arthritis Foundation. We had stopped at a locally famous pub to enjoy some Irish music, and after the first set had concluded, I found myself talking with one of our group members, a Fortune 500 Chief Marketing Officer whose husband suffered from severe arthritis.

Though she cared deeply about the cause - and the Major Gift Officer and the Executive Director had done their best to engage her, the CMO's giving had always been modest.

But that night in Dublin, a million miles away from her daily pressures, she shared openly about her life, her family, her fondness for dogs and well... just about everything. The next day, she made one of the largest gifts the Foundation had ever received. This was the first of many such experiences.

I came to understand that travel isn’t just about where we go—it’s about what opens within us when we get there. Shared journeys deepen relationships, reignite purpose, and inspire generosity in powerful ways.

Today, many journeys and millions of dollars raised later, I continue to help organizations harness that same magic—using travel to strengthen donor relationships and inspire greater giving than ever before.
